Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have been at the heart of business operations for decades. They manage key functions like finances, inventory, supply chains, and human resources, helping businesses work more efficiently and stay connected across different departments. Over the years, they have adapted in step with technological advances, evolving from on-premises systems to agile, cloud-based platforms that support global collaboration.

Now, we’re entering a new era of ERP: one where AI agents are becoming built into the platforms businesses already rely on.

This next generation of ERP goes further than managing data or automating routine tasks. It helps your business turn insights into action, supporting faster decision-making and more automated processes. Powered by AI, these systems scan large volumes of data, spot patterns, and forecast outcomes. From there, they can recommend what to do next or act on those recommendations automatically, with human oversight and built-in guardrails keeping things on track.

How  Microsoft is building toward agentic ERP

Agentic ERP refers to a new type of system that doesn’t just automate tasks but assists, advises, and optimizes operations more strategically. Powered by generative AI and tools like Copilot, Microsoft’s vision of agentic ERP blends the flexibility of cloud technology with the power of artificial intelligence.

This connected AI-driven ecosystem is enabling a new set of capabilities:

  • Automated finance and supply chain management: Dynamics 365 uses machine learning to automate financial processes, including variance analysis and vendor invoice management, and streamline supply chain activities, including planning, order fulfillment, and inventory management. With AI-driven demand forecasting and supply planning, businesses can better anticipate demand, optimize stock levels and reduce waste.
  • AI virtual assistant for decision-making: Microsoft Copilot is changing how users interact with ERP systems. Acting as a conversational interface, Copilot retrieves data and analyzes it to provide actionable recommendations. For example, if a sale drops unexpectedly, it can highlight contributing factors and suggest potential responses. When capacity constraints arise, it can help evaluate alternatives such as subcontracting.

With natural language capabilities, users can query the system, generate reports, or explore insights simply by asking, making ERP data far more accessible across the organization. “With Copilot, your team can confirm inventory levels at any moment in seconds simply by asking in natural language,” explained Jinnie Wong, Principal Program Manager at Microsoft.
  • AI agents supporting workflows: A key innovation is the introduction of AI-powered agents within Dynamics 365. Built into the platform, these agents support and partially automate specific tasks, such as tracking expenses, managing document flows, monitoring logistics, working alongside employees or handling defined workflows on their own. Over time, they learn from interactions and data, becoming more accurate and effective. Increasingly, these agents can also operate across systems, connecting ERP data with tools like Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform to help organizations break down silos.

The benefits of agentic ERP

AI-powered ERP systems are reshaping how businesses operate by enabling faster, more informed decision-making and reducing manual effort. Microsoft is embedding AI across Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Microsoft 365 to support this shift, while also emphasizing governance, security, and responsible AI use.

LS Retail stays closely aligned with Microsoft's AI development through ongoing collaboration and programs like the Red Carpet AI initiative. That means the Copilot and agent capabilities evolving inside Business Central are ones our team is already working with, and bringing into LS Central

With agentic ERP capabilities, businesses can benefit from:

Enhanced productivity

By automating repetitive tasks and supporting users with AI-driven insights, teams can focus more on strategic work. Activities like data entry, reporting, and reconciliation become faster and less resource-intensive.

Greater scalability and flexibility

As businesses grow, ERP systems must handle increasing complexity. AI-powered, cloud-based solutions like Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central are designed to scale, while tools like Copilot Studio allow businesses to build and customize their own AI agents tailored to specific needs.

More informed and timely decisions

With access to real-time insights, businesses can respond more quickly to market changes. AI-driven forecasting helps anticipate disruptions and identify opportunities earlier, improving agility and resilience.

Reduced risk of errors

Automation and AI-assisted workflows can reduce manual data entry and repetitive work, helping lower the risk of human error in routine processes. At the same time, governance frameworks and human oversight ensure that decisions remain aligned with business rules and compliance requirements.

Is your business ready for the future of ERP?

Microsoft’s investments in Copilot and AI agents point toward a future where ERP systems are more proactive, adaptive, and intelligent. Rather than simply recording what has happened, they increasingly help shape what should happen next.

“Microsoft is leading the way to a new reality for ERP – a world where ERP solutions run more autonomously, constantly adapting to ever-changing conditions, bringing users in when they’re needed,” said Georg Glantschnig, Vice President of AI ERP at Microsoft.

As AI capabilities continue to advance, the potential of agentic ERP will only grow. For organizations looking to improve productivity, respond faster to change, and automate more of their operations, understanding where agentic ERP can add value is becoming increasingly important.
